Escape to Faithlegg this October: Experience the South East
There’s something about October that makes a few days away feel especially inviting. Crisp mornings, changing leaves and evenings that call for a glowing fire, a good dinner and nowhere you need to be.
At Faithlegg, autumn brings a slower pace to the estate, with cosy fires, indulgent seasonal dining, relaxing spa time and luxury accommodation to return to at the end of the day. And when you do feel like venturing out, some of the South East’s most interesting cultural events, autumn experiences and Hallowe’en adventures are within easy reach.
Here are a few worth adding to your October plans.
See Mount Congreve in Autumn Colour
October is a beautiful time to visit Mount Congreve Gardens, when its 70 acres of gardens and woodland take on shades of copper, gold and russet.
Take your time wandering through the estate, stop for something warming in the Stables Café or join one of the seasonal garden tours, which focus on autumn colour, textured bark and fruiting trees throughout September and October.
There’s something a little darker waiting later in the month too. On 29 October, Mount Congreve hosts Poison & Petals, an adults-only Hallowe’en garden tour exploring poisonous plants, folklore, hidden histories and some of the garden’s more curious botanical residents.
An Evening at the Theatre Royal
A crisp autumn evening is a good excuse for a night at the theatre, and Theatre Royal Waterford has plenty happening throughout October.
The programme includes Hothouse Flowers on 2 October, The Four Italian Tenors on 9 October, Niall Breslin & The Polaris Quartet on 16 October and The Ennio Morricone Experience on 17 October. Local production Up the Déise! takes to the stage from 21 to 24 October, while comedian Chris Kent rounds off the month on Hallowe’en night.
Choose your show, enjoy an early dinner and make a proper evening of it.
Celebrate 75 Years of Wexford Festival Opera
One of the highlights of the South East’s cultural calendar celebrates a very special birthday this year. Wexford Festival Opera marks its 75th anniversary with 17 days of opera, music and events from 15 to 31 October.
The 2026 programme features three mainstage operas, Iris, L’equivoco stravagante and The Gambler, alongside recitals, concerts, pop-up performances and special anniversary events.
A highlight is Croí na Féile, the 75th Anniversary Concert on 17 October, bringing four internationally acclaimed opera singers together with the Wexford Festival Opera Orchestra for one night only.
You don’t have to be a seasoned opera-goer to enjoy the festival atmosphere either. Throughout the festival, free pop-up performances bring music into shops, hotels and unexpected corners of Wexford town, making it a lovely October day trip even without an opera ticket.
Take a Walk on the Wicked Side
If your idea of an October break involves something a little spookier, Wicked Woods returns for the first time in five years.
Taking place on the Waterford Greenway beside SETU Arena at Carriganore from 23 to 26 October, this after-dark walk brings together award-winning Spraoi performers, spectacular Samhain serpents, lighting and atmospheric sound for an immersive journey through the woods.
It’s a very different way to experience Waterford at Hallowe’en and one for those who like their autumn adventures with a little more edge.
Make Faithlegg Your Autumn Base
Of course, an October escape doesn’t need to be busy from morning until night. Part of the pleasure is knowing you can do as much, or as little, as you please.
Spend the morning among the autumn colours at Mount Congreve, dress up for an evening of opera in Wexford, catch a show in Waterford or brave Wicked Woods after dark. Then return to Faithlegg, where the fires are glowing and dinner, a comfortable room and a slower pace await.
And if the weather turns? That might just be the perfect excuse for a spa treatment, a long lunch, afternoon tea or a quiet drink by the fire.
This October, come to Faithlegg for a few days of good food, fresh air and autumn comfort, with the very best of Waterford and the South East waiting just beyond the estate.
